Description
Methomyl is a broad-spectrum carbamate insecticide used to control a wide range of pests, including aphids, caterpillars, leafhoppers, thrips, and whiteflies. It is used in agriculture to protect crops such as fruits, vegetables, cotton, and tobacco from insect damage. Methomyl is also used in public health for controlling pests in homes and gardens.
Methomyl works by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme critical for the proper functioning of the insect nervous system. This leads to the accumulation of acetylcholine, causing continuous nerve stimulation, paralysis, and eventually the death of the insect.
As a contact and stomach insecticide, methomyl provides effective protection by killing pests that ingest it or come into direct contact with treated plants. While it is highly effective in controlling pests, methomyl has moderate toxicity to humans and animals and is considered a cholinesterase inhibitor. It can be toxic to bees, aquatic organisms, and other beneficial insects, so care should be taken when applying near water bodies or during flowering periods.
