Due to the broad-spectrum herbicidal activity of glufosinate-ammonium, its rapid degradation and inactivation in soil, and its low toxicity to non-target organisms, it is possible to develop genetically modified crops that are resistant to glufosinate-ammonium. This would allow glufosinate-ammonium to selectively kill weeds without harming the crops. Researchers at AgForte have isolated the bar gene from strains of Streptomyces hygroscopicus and the pat gene from strains of Streptomyces viridifaciens. These two genes share 80% homology and both encode the enzyme glufosinate-ammonium acetyltransferase, which can inactivate glufosinate-ammonium by acetylating it.
By introducing these two resistance genes into crops, the crops can express the glufosinate-ammonium acetyltransferase enzyme. This allows the glufosinate-ammonium absorbed by the crop to be inactivated, significantly reducing the herbicide's toxicity to the crop itself.
